Accessibility at Fourth Space Games
Last updated 2026-10-25
We want anyone to be able to browse the shop and place an order here, whether you use a mouse, a keyboard, a screen reader, voice control, or a phone held very close to your face. This page says what we aim for, what we have actually checked, what we know is not finished yet, and how to tell us when something does not work.
The standard we aim for
We are working to WCAG 2.1 Level AA — the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the W3C, at their middle conformance level. That is the bar we hold this site to on every public page: the shop, individual product pages, the cart, checkout, order status, list import, and these policy pages.
What we have checked
Our last check was 25 October 2026, and we re-run it before any public launch. It was done with automated tools in a real browser: no person has yet tested the site with a screen reader (see below). It covered:
- An automated audit using axe-core against the WCAG 2.0 A/AA, WCAG 2.1 A/AA and best-practice rule sets, at desktop width (1280px) and phone width (390px), on the shop, a product page, the cart, checkout, order status, list import, and the accessibility, returns, privacy, terms and shipping pages. It found no problems on any of them.
- Keyboard order, stepping through with the Tab key. On the checkout page every control is reached in a sensible order, has a name, shows a visible focus indicator, and nothing traps focus. On the shop page we checked the skip links and the first thirty controls the same way.
- The shop page by keyboard. As well as "Skip to main content", the shop page has a second skip link that jumps straight past the filters to the products. The "Filters" control on narrow screens is a real button that says whether the filters are open; on wide screens, where the filters are always showing, it is not in the keyboard order at all.
- Text alternatives on product images. Every product image on the shop page carries a real description rather than an empty one.
- Colour contrast against the 4.5:1 AA requirement, as part of the automated audit: nothing failed. Body text, light grey on our navy, measures about 15:1.
- Zoom and reflow: the pages above at a 320px-wide window and at 640px (the same as 200% zoom on a desktop screen), with no sideways scrolling. This check caught the order status form running off the edge of a narrow phone screen; that is fixed.
- The pickup-or-ship choice at checkout and the shipping policy page. Card payment was switched off for this check, so the hand-off to the card page Stripe hosts has not been checked yet (see below).
What we know is not finished
We would rather tell you this than have you find out. As of the date at the top of this page:
- No human screen reader pass yet. Everything above was found by automated tools and scripted keyboard testing. Automated tools catch perhaps a third of the barriers a real person hits. A pass with a screen reader by a human is on our list and has not happened.
- Card checkout not checked yet. Paying by card was switched off when we last checked, so the step from our checkout to the card page and back again has not been tested. We will check it when card payment goes live.
- Some pages are not ours. The page where you enter your card details is hosted by Stripe, our payment processor, not by us. Its accessibility is theirs to maintain, and it is the part of a checkout we cannot fix ourselves. The same goes for our Discord server and the map link in the footer.
- In-store and staff screens are out of scope. The check-in tablet in the shop and the staff sign-in page are not customer pages and are excluded from search engines. If you have trouble with the tablet in the store, just say so at the counter — we will do it for you.
We do not use an accessibility overlay
There is no overlay, widget, toolbar or plugin on this site claiming to make it accessible. Those products do not fix the underlying pages, they frequently interfere with the screen reader or keyboard setup you already have configured the way you like it, and disability advocacy groups have asked site owners not to use them. We would rather fix the pages.
Tell us about a problem
If any part of this site is hard or impossible for you to use, tell us and we will fix it. You do not need to know what is wrong technically — "I can't get to the checkout button with my keyboard" is a perfect report.
Email: sales@fourthspacegames.com
Phone: (740) 414-3547
In person: 524 2nd St, Portsmouth, OH 45662, during our open hours (they are
at the bottom of every page).
Calling during open hours is the fastest way to reach us. We read every email too and answer as soon as we can, but we are a one-person shop, so a phone call gets a quicker answer. Either way we will tell you whether it is fixed or when it will be.
And if you would rather not fight with a web page at all: call the store or come in, and we will take your order for you. That is always available, and it is not a lesser option.
- For pickup, we set it aside and you pay at the counter when you collect it.
- For shipping, we text or email you a secure card payment link from Stripe, and it ships once that is paid.
We do not accept checks or cash by mail.
